Freedom from the Kilns

At Pakistan's brick kilns, whole families are held in debt slavery that has lasted for generations. They owe a debt they can never repay, and they work for wages they barely ever see. We buy these families out and set them free.

Trapped for generations

More than three million people are held in debt slavery in Pakistan, at over ten thousand brick kilns. Many of these families have been at the same kiln for generations. They carry a debt that their forefathers took from the kiln owner, and it can never be repaid.

They work for wages they barely see. Most of what they earn is deducted as payments on the old loan, so no matter how hard they work, the debt never ends and the family is never free.

“They are paying a debt their grandfathers took, for wages they never see.”

Brutal conditions

The families work without shoes and without proper clothes. In summer the heat at the kilns reaches 140°F and it burns the skin; in winter they are cold. They live where they work, with no clean water and no washrooms, and disease kills the children fast.

  • A debt taken by their forefathers that can never be repaid.
  • Wages mostly deducted as loan payments, so they barely see any money.
  • Work without shoes and without proper clothes.
  • Heat of up to 140°F in summer, cold in winter, and no shelter from either.
  • No clean water and no washrooms, and disease that kills children quickly.

We set them free

Gospel OnFire buys these families out of the kilns. It costs about three thousand dollars to clear the debt on one family and set them free. Until a family can be brought out, we give them water filters and a Holy Bible, and we build washrooms and bathrooms so they are safer where they are.

Step by step

How freedom from the kilnsactually happens

01

We find the families

Our team goes to the brick kilns and meets the families who are trapped there, many of them for generations.

We find the families
02

We meet their needs straight away

Water filters for safe drinking water, a Holy Bible with every filter, and prayer, right where they are working.

03

We make the kiln safer

We install water pumps and build washrooms and bathrooms, so the girls no longer have to go into the fields.

04

We rescue the family

We work to release the family from the kiln and from the debt that has held them for generations.

We rescue the family
05

We walk with them in freedom

A rescued family is connected to a local home church and to a pastor who stays with them as they start again.
